DID YOU KNOW? Kate Sheppard is the pioneer and leader of Women Suffrage movement in New Zealand. She has paved the way for Kiwi women to be granted their right to vote in 1893. Kiwi women are the first in the world to be given such right. Her work had become the blueprint followed by other women in other countries.
She was born March 10, 1847 in the UK and moved to New Zealand in 1869. She died in Christchurch in 1934.
A memorial to her exists in Christchurch. She also appear in New Zealand’s 10 dollar note. Several streets in New Zealand were also named after her. Another novel piece of recognition in the New Zealand capital, Wellington, is the changing of pedestrian crossing’s green light to her silhouette.
