Today in Philippine History:
A municipal ordinance was issued forbidding the natives (of the Philippines) to wear silks and other “stuff” from China. The ordinance was enforced due to economic impact of the importation of Chinese goods.
The native industries was said to have been impacted by these import thus demoralizing the people. The very low price of Chinese silk, as well as cotton threatens the elimination of Peninsular silk in Spain and thus draining gold and silver from the treasury.
