Lorenzo Ruiz was beatified by Pope John Paul II during his visit to the Philippines. The beatification was the first to be held outside the Vatican City, Rome.
Lorenzo Ruiz was hailed for his martyrdom. He sought asylum and left for Japan in 1636 after being falsely accused of killing a Spaniard. In Japan, Ruiz showed his loyalty to the Christian faith by not recanting it despite the torture brought upon him by the Japanese. Ruiz endured tortures which made his companions recant their faith.
He died September 29, 1637 after being hung upside down in a pit by his tormentors.
