TODAY IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY:
On order of the revolutionary government in Cavite, Lt. Col Maximo Abad released Captain Devereux Shields and his men in Buenavista. Captain Shields was the leader of the American soldiers who fought in the island of Marinduque against the Philippine forces there led by Lt. Col. Maximo Abad.
Filipino resistance had been continuous in Marinduque and so American soldiers led by Captain Shields and his unit of around 54 soldiers were dispatch to pacify the “guerillas” in the mountains of Torijos in the island, thereby setting the stage for the Battle of Pulang Lupa as Captain Shields and his men face off against Lt. Col Maximo Abad and his men of trusted followers. Captain Shields’ troops were captured in September 13 and later released after Abad’s troops were overpowered by the rescuing American soldiers.
