The snap presidential and vice presidential elections were held conducted by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC). The election was called by President Marcos in response to the growing social and political unrest and deteriorating peace and order situation.
President Marcos with the former Senate President and Foreign Minister Arturo Tolentino was pitted against the tandem of Corazon Aquino (widow of the late senator and martyr, Benigno Aquino Jr.) and former Senator Salvador H. Laurel.
