TODAY IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY:
General Douglas MacArthur announced the end of Japanese resistance in the Philippines. With other Pacific Islands now in Allied hands, attention shifted entirely to Japan, where bombardment of Japanese home islands began in early July.
August brought swift action: the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6; the U.S.S.R. declared war on Japan on August 8; and the second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9.
By mid-month, Japan accepted unconditional surrender, and on September 2, formal ceremonies occurred aboard U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
