TODAY IN PHILIPPINE HISTORY:
The Philippine flag was flown for the first time during the proclamation of Philippine Independence.
After a bitter struggle, Spanish troops in Manila and outlying towns were crushed by allied American and Filipino forces and Spain’s 400-year-long occupation came to an end.
With the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1898, the Spanish-American War ended and the USA effectively bought the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico for US$20 million. Emilio Aguinaldo was installed as president of the first Philippine republic.
